The Shepherd’s Hut – Tim Winton

The Shepherd’s Hut is Winton’s long awaited new release. With big shoes to fill I was pleasantly surprised to see that not only did he fill them but outgrow them. The Shepherd’s Hut follows the story of young and angry Jaxie Clackton, who has just left behind his abusive father to find his own way.

For the first time in me life I know what I want and I have what it takes to get me there. If you never experienced that I feel sorry for you.

But it wasn’t always like this. I been through fire to get here. So be happy for me. And for fucksake, don’t get in my way.

This read for me was complete and utter Winton perfection. Honestly, this book will knock you for six. Jaxie is one of the strongest character voices I have ever read. As a reader I can promise you that you won’t be getting his voice out of your head anytime soon. Explosive, strong and timely, Winton takes a good hard look at the toxic masculinity that runs rampant within rural Australia. I was hooked on this one from the very beginning and devoured each and every page of this intense read. I highly recommend this memorable read. Australian in every way Winton gives the reader a violent and sparse insight in real life and all of it’s grittiness.
