Favourite Bookish Places: Suburbs

My favourite bookish places: round two, the surrounding suburbs of Adelaide. There are so many great locations to choose from that I have narrowed it down to a handful. Let me know if there are any I may have missed! I’m always looking for great new bookshops to discover. If you are a local make sure you hunt these places down and experience all that Adelaide has to offer.

Dillons Bookstore, The Parade

Dillons Bookstore located on popular Norwood lifestyle precinct is by far the best independent bookstore in Adelaide. This brightly lit, inviting bookstore is enormous and has comfy couches perfect for perusing books. The shelves are always well stocked with lots of local Australian authors on display. There is a wall of staff recommendations, which  I always stop by for inspiration and on top of that the staff are always friendly and helpful. You also can’t go past a bargain on the tables outside and I have found many a great book for less that $10. On top of all that, they even have a loyalty card with every 10th book free! I don’t know about you but I love a loyal card. You will find it difficult to walk out without a book in hand, but no fear! Just stroll down the road to Argo on the Parade  or La Madeleine for a coffee and treat.

Mockingbird Lounge, Broadway  Glenelg South

Mockingbird Lounge is every book lovers dream: a cafe crossed second hand book store. The cafe is located in an old shop front that just keeps going and going. Rooms and rooms filled with wall to wall shelves follow each other culminating in a quaint courtyards perfect for a cup of tea and a book in delightful weather. When I finally made it there I was surprised at just how extensive their range and quantity of books. It was all too easy to make several selections to take home. Added to the experience was the fact that others in the cafe are fellow book loves. Plenty of book clubs meet on  regular basis there and I found I had other walking past and commenting on my book choices, which really added to the great experience. Do recommend for a bookish coffee with friends discussing your latest reads.

Lightbulb Cafe, King William Road

Another that is technically non bookish, however, I love nothing more than sitting in this gorgeous cafe on weekends with a coffee (that is always great) or a nutella hot chocolate if I’m feeling decadent, maybe a little brunch (the food is impeccable) with my latest read on hand. The staff are friendly and welcoming and never fail to ask what I’m reading. The cafe itself is light, bright and charming filled with comfy booths and pillows, even providing blankets on the outside tables in these cooler months. Even better they feature a local artist with new artwork on display each month so shop local and enjoy this beautiful little cafe. Look out of the gorgeous door!

Chapter Two Books and Matilda Bookshop, Stirling

Wanting to head out for a drive in the Adelaide Hills? Stop by the quaint little town of Stirling and you will find these two bookstores nestled together. Chapter Two Books is a secondhand bookstore nestled at the back of a walkway. It is gorgeous and filled with plenty of great books for you to peruse and discover. Matilda Bookshop is another independent bookstore that is well stocked with plenty of local Australian fiction on offer. Grab a couple of books and head to one of the cute cafes in town or in better weather head down to the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens for a bit of outside reading.
